On June 11, 2008, Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a public apology on behalf of the Government of Canada and the leaders of the other federal parties in the House of Commons of Canada. The legacy of the system has been linked to an increased prevalence of post-traumatic stress, alcoholism, substance abuse, and suicide, which persist within Indigenous communities today. It ultimately proved successful in disrupting the transmission of Indigenous practices and beliefs across generations. Disconnected from their families and culture and forced to speak English or French, students who attended the residential school system often graduated unable to fit into either their communities or Canadian society. The residential school system harmed Indigenous children significantly by removing them from their families, depriving them of their ancestral languages, exposing many of them to physical and sexual abuse, and forcibly enfranchising them. The number of school related deaths remains unknown due to an incomplete historical record, though estimates range from 3,200 upwards of 6,000. Over the course of the system’s more than hundred-year existence, about 30% of Indigenous children (around 150,000) were placed in residential schools nationally. The school system was created for the purpose of removing children from the influence of their own culture and assimilating them into the dominant Canadian culture. The network was funded by the Canadian government’s Department of Indian Affairs and administered by Christian churches. In Canada, the Indian residential school system was a network of boarding schools for Indigenous peoples. The broadcast also included a short introduction with Chanie’s sister Pearl Wenjack and other family members in conversation with Gord Downie, and was followed by the Road to Reconciliation panel discussion. It was broadcast by the CBC on October 23rd, 2016, on the 50th anniversary of Chanie Wenjack’s death. Jeff Lemire collaborated with Downie on the creation of a graphic novel, which along with the music was the inspiration for the production of the film. The film originated as a set of poems written by Gord Downie (of the Tragically Hip), which he later turned into the 10 songs featured in the film in collaboration with Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene). This rest of this page has a brief overview, and links to further information on the film, the residential school system, and reconciliation efforts currently underway. The showing is co-sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology, Communications, History, and Sociology, BDIC, the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies, and WMUA. Stucco may be applied directly to a solid base such as masonry applied to concrete walls such as foundations or applied to metal lath attached to frame construction. It consists of portland cement-based materials and sand mixed with water to form a workable plaster that hardens to provide a strong, durable, and tough surface. Traditional portland cement plaster, commonly known as stucco, is a time-tested exterior finish. Traditional veneer plaster can be as thick as 1/2” modern veneers are 1/16” – 3/16”. Veneer Plaster starts with a specialized gypsum base similar to drywall, a thin veneer of base coat, plaster and/or finish plasters are then applied over the gypsum base. Damaged moldings can still be repaired or reproduced as necessary. Custom plaster moldings are commonly seen in historic homes and buildings. Originally popular in prewar homes (before the widespread use of drywall in the 1940s), walls made with this technique add depth, sheen, and dimension to a space. Veneer plaster is typically used for interior walls and ceilings. Published on OctoVenetian plaster walls are having a moment, and it's not difficult to see why. Firstly, you can make a math calculation as accurately as possible, or secondly - the more popular method - uses an empty spark plug socket with a pressure gauge inserted. Part of the puzzle is fitting your things around the possessions of people you live with. We all love a bit of a headscratch sometimes - something to challenge the old noodle and vexate the little grey cells. Chantilly Lace is one of Sherwin Williams’ true Whites, and given the lightness of Classic Gray, I’m more inclined to pair it with a white that will make it pop, rather than an off-white. Personally, I like to pair Classic Gray with Chantilly Lace. What trim colors work well with Classic Gray? It’s so much easier to make the right call when you compare the paint color to others. I’d also recommend ordering darker and lighter grays as well as grays in the purple and blue undertone family to make sure a gray green is right for your space. This allows you to correctly asses the color. I love using a poster board and placing the peel and stick samples (without removing the sticker) like you see below. It’s impossible to see undertones and evaluate the color for what it really is on anything other than a true white background. The worst thing you can do when testing out paint colors is to paint a new color over an old color. If you still like idea of a neutral gray with green undertones, but need something darker after observing your light, try Edgecomb Gray–it’s still fairly light, but has more depth to it than Classic Gray. The only way to really know for sure is to test out the paint color in your space and observe it throughout the day. In a room that gets a ton of natural light, you might not like how Classic Gray looks, as it will likely be washed out. So, as you can imagine, Classic Gray does have more depth than an off-white, but it’s still very pale. For reference, many off-white paint colors are in the low 80s. On the light reflective scale, with 0 being the blackest black and 100 being ultra pure white, Classic Gray is a 74. I’ve named Classic Gray to one of my five favorite living room paint colors, if you’re interested in checking the rest of the neutral hues out! Evaluate your lightĬlassic Gray is a very light paint color. If your home has cooler undertones like blues, I really prefer to choose a gray with blue or even blue/green undertones. Personally, I like to pair Classic Gray with warmer neutrals the best–think warm wooden tones, linen, beige, and off-white. To really make sure Classic Gray enhances, rather than detracts, you’ll want to evaluate it with the undertones in the furniture and fixed elements that you already have.Ĭlassic Gray is also technically a greige, so keep that in mind when going over the undertones in your home. Green-gray or gray-greens are much easier to work with than grays with blue or grays with purple, so that’s the good news. Tips for deciding if Classic Gray will work well in your spaceįollow these three simple tips to make sure Classic Gray is right for your space! Check the undertones of your fixed elementsĪs you read above, you know that Classic Gray has a green undertone. I’ll explain how Classic Gray’s undertones will play into your decision making towards the bottom of the post. What undertones does Benjamin Moore Classic Gray have?Ĭlassic Gray has subtle green undertones, which always surprises people when I first tell them, but when they compare the color to other grays, they realize the green can easily be seen.ĭid you know that not one single gray is undertone free? Gray paint colors either have a blue, green or purple undertone and some grays will have more than one of these, making things even more complicated. If you’re looking for an off-white, you’ll be disappointed with Classic Gray, as there’s just too much greige in it to be called an off-white.īelow, I’ve shown Classic Gray next to Cloud White. Pair classic gray next to a true off white, like Cloud White, and you can easily see it doesn’t belong in the off-white category. Despite the fact that Benjamin Moore classifies Classic Gray as an off-white, it’s anything but. While the name obviously points to gray, Classic Gray’s color is anything but obvious, as technically, it’s a very pale gray beige or simply a greige. In this research, we develop a novel way to quantify the proximity required in more than 800 occupations by grouping them into ten work arenas according to their proximity to coworkers and customers, the number of interpersonal interactions involved, and their on-site and indoor nature. The others look at the pandemic’s long-term influence on consumption and the potential for a broad recovery led by enhanced productivity and innovation. This report on the future of work after COVID-19 is the first of three MGI reports that examine aspects of the postpandemic economy. Many other workers were deemed essential and continued to work in hospitals and grocery stores, on garbage trucks and in warehouses, yet under new protocols to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus. The short-term consequences were sudden and often severe: Millions of people were furloughed or lost jobs, and others rapidly adjusted to working from home as offices closed. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted labor markets globally during 2020. |
